An elderly woman has died following an incident on the A34 near Litchfield earlier today (Friday)

AN ELDERLY woman has died following a collision on the A34 earlier today (Friday).

Emergency services were called to an incident near Litchfield on the A34 at about 11.45am this morning, after receiving reports of a collision involving two single-decker coaches and a car.

The front seat passenger in the car, an elderly woman, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital by road ambulance, where she was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, an elderly man, was also taken to hospital with less serious injuries.

Two other people were treated at the scene, but did not require hospital treatment.

One of the coaches was later able to continue on its way, while the passengers of the other coach involved were transported to Tot Hill Services.

Following the incident, the road was closed briefly in both directions to allow an air ambulance to land, although this was not required and the northbound carriageway re-opened shortly after.

The southbound carriageway, however, is expected to remain closed for about an hour, according to Hampshire Constabulary at about 3.35pm.

This is to enable police to continue their investigations and for the vehicles to be recovered.

Anyone with any information on the incident is urged to contact Acting Sergeant Steve Antrobus, of Whitchurch Roads Policing Unit, on 101 or 0845 0454545, quoting Operation Glassline.
