Woman shaves head in public for late mother lost to brain tumour

A Thatcham woman has paid tribute to her late mother by having her head shaved in public for charity.

Sarah Jones took to the Broadway with friends and family on Saturday for an act of bravery in aid of bereavement charity Sue Ryder.

Mrs Jones’ mother lost her battle with cancer on June 28, shortly after expressing the desire to do a charity head shave.

“Mum was diagnosed with a brain tumour in April but when she found out she wanted to shave her head we thought she would not cope," she said.

“She ended up not having it done.

“Just before she passed away, I was chatting with her and asked how she feels about me doing it.

“She rolled her eyes at me but she said yes so this is all for her now.”

Mrs Jones passed the scissors to her loved ones and one by one chunks of her hair were snipped off until nothing was left.

Friends and family young and old took a snip with friend Claire Denner shearing the remainder off before the Broadway became filled with cheer and applause.

“I am feeling really good,” the mother-of-two commented after having the last of her hair shaved.

“Hearing the first snips of it was fine but I knew there was no turning back.

“I thought, I can’t have one little short bit and the rest of it gone.”

Despite being told she looked funny by her niece, Mrs Jones said she felt brilliant about doing

She said she was grateful to all those who turned up as well as Sue Ryder for “scooping up” the family when they needed it most.

“It feels like a spikey toothbrush,” she laughed as she brushed over her head with her hands.

“It was great to have the mayor of Thatcham here because it meant there was more gravitas to the occasion, it was nice to have so many people here.”
