Woman trapped in A34 collision just south of Chieveley

Third incident on A34 in local area in last few days

A WOMAN was trapped in a collision on the A34 southbound last night (Sunday), which forced the road to close.

This was the third incident on the A34 in the local area near Newbury over the last few days.

In the latest incident last night, two fire engines from Newbury were called at 9pm to the A34 just south of Chieveley, to a two-vehicle collision.

A woman was discovered trapped by her feet in the dashboard of a burgundy Nissan pick-up.

Firefighters used special equipment to push the dashboard away to free her.

The woman was given into the care of waiting paramedics and taken to hospital.

The A34 south was closed throughout the incident.

Firefighters left the scene at 9.35pm.

A man had a lucky escape on the A34 on Sunday afternoon, after a car careered up an embankment, before crashing into a tree.

One fire engine from Newbury and two more from Oxfordshire, were called at 4pm to the A34 north, between the Chilton and Milton interchanges, where a grey Hyundai Getz had left the carriageway, before going up an embankment and colliding with a tree.

Firefighters discovered the driver had managed to get out of the vehicle, but was badly shaken.

Firefighters administered first aid to the man, and provided him with oxygen, until paramedics arrived.

The car lost a wheel in the collision and which rolled to the bottom of the embankment.

The car was found halted upright on the remaining 3 wheels.

Police were also at the scene.

One lane of the carriageway was closed during the incident.

On Friday, at around 2pm, a crane broke down southbound on the A34 at East Ilsley, with some 100 litres hydraulic fluid spilt on the carriageway from the leaking vehicle.

The incident partially blocked the road, with congestion back to the Milton interchange.

Firefighters at the scene covered drains with special clay mats to prevent contamination of local water courses.

Three local MPs, including Newbury MP, Richard Benyon, were due to meet the roads minister to discuss safety issues on the A34, after several recent fatal collisions on the road at East Ilsley, including an horrific incident in which a mother and three children lost their lives.
