Women's clothing discovered near Ramsbury pond in which boots and gun were found
Wiltshire Police confirmed this afternoon (Wednesday) that a pile of around 60 pieces of material, some of which are believed to be items of women’s clothing, were discovered buried beneath a few inches of mud around 100 yards from the pond in Hilldrop Lane.
A chunky knit cardigan (pictured) was also discovered nearby.
Police are satisfied that these clothes did not belong to Miss O'Callaghan, who was murdered on March 19, 2011.
The items will be sent for forensic testing.
Officers have said they are keeping an open mind as to why they are there and that they may not be linked to the investigation.
The pond has also today been drained to allow fingertip searches to be conducted of the silt at the bottom.
In October 2012, Swindon taxi driver Christopher Halliwell, who at the time of Miss O’Callaghan’s death lived in Ashbury Avenue, pleaded guilty to her murder.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to serve a minimum of 25 years, when he appeared before Bristol Crown Court.
He was not tried for a second murder after leading police to Rebecca Godden's buried body when he was not cautioned by investigating officer Det Supt Steve Fulcher before he led police to the body in Gloucestershire.
Today’s discoveries were made in after an extensive search of the surrounding area with the use of cadaver dogs trained in tracing human remains.
Hilldrop Lane has been closed since Thursday, after the discovery of a left boot on Wednesday.
On Friday, the right boot was found, and soonafter a single-barrelled shotgun was also pulled from the water.
The boots are believed to be those worn by Miss O’Callaghan at the time she went missing from Suju nightclub, Swindon.
Full coverage of the investigation will be included in tomorrow’s Newbury Weekly News.
