Woolhampton crash driver 'recovering'
The drama happened around 1pm yesterday on the busy A4 Bath Road when the articulated lorry, carrying a mobile home, crashed into the pub.
Licensee Wayne Sangwell said the incident was like an “earthquake” and added that staff and customers were shocked but unhurt.
Firefighters from Newbury, Mortimer and Reading attended the scene and used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the driver in an operationt lasted one hour.
The driver was eventually airlifted by the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
Spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service, James Keating-Wilkes, initially said the driver’s injuries were feared to be life threatening.
However Mr Sangwell said later: “I have been in contact with the driver’s company who have said he is doing fine.”
The road remained closed in both directions for around four hours.
The pub sustained some damage but was reported it to be safe and open for business as usual.
Translux International, manufacturers of the mobile home, supply location vehicles to the film and television industry, however the lorry’s final destination has not yet been confirmed.
Another vehicle, an Audi, is also reported to have been involved in the incident.
