Woolhampton Annual Show celebrates village with variety of winners

Around 100 people attended the Woolhampton Annual Show to see the best of the village’s vegetables, flowers and creations.

Held at the village hall on Saturday, August 13, the 21st annual show had a variety of different competitions for local residents to enter.

Cathy Vallis was “surprised” and “absolutely gobsmacked” when her “perfect example” of a cucumber was named best vegetable in show.

Mrs Vallis also had the best photograph of a brolly, one of the five categories of the photography competition.

Other photography winners included Dorothy Nesbit with her gate photograph, Catherine Lovell with her jubilee-themed photograph and Anne Zorner who won both the animals in action and jewels of nature categories.

The ever-popular ‘potatoes-in-a-container’ competition had 25 entries this year.

Those who entered the competition received three potatoes in March with the aim of achieving the highest yield from those potatoes by growing them in a sealed container for five months.

Contestants can do whatever they want in their attempts to grow the heaviest amount of potatoes, but they must be able to bring their intact container with them along to the competition.

Roger Bailey took home this year’s ‘golden potato’ award with his winning weight of 14lb 12oz from just 3 tubers.

Brian Chick won this year’s four vegetables on a board competition for an exemplary cauliflower, sweetcorn, leak and onion.

Min Vaughan-Fowler won both the best floral display and most fragrant rose with her beautiful and pungent flower.

The tallest sunflower competition was won by Jenny Campbell, with her entry having a height of 281cm.

Viv Rampling won best in show for cookery and preserves for her boil and bake cake.

The show’s organisers thanked all the contestants, judges, helpers and attendees for making the show such a success.
