Woolton Hill power cut victims take fight to MP

Simon Trevers, of Broad Layings, Woolton Hill, contacted Newburytoday's sister publication the Newbury Weekly News on Friday (31), to say villagers were experiencing their second power cut that day and were “fed up,” with more power cuts, following interruptions to supplies over Christmas, including all day on Christmas Eve.
“We really want Southern Electric to get it fixed properly. I'm now contacting our local MP to complain about Southern Electric's handling of this, “ said Mr Trevers.
Southern Electric spokeswoman, Hannah Gleave, said on Tuesday (4), that details of only one recent power cut in Woolton Hill had been recorded by the company on Sunday (2) at shortly after 7.15pm, affecting 47 customers in Falcon Coppice, Douglas Ride and Green Wave.
The majority had power restored by 9pm, but around ten customers faced a wait of seven hours, before being hooked up to a generator, restoring power at 4am.
Repairs were then carried out the following day (Monday) and the remaining affected customers re-connected to the mains supply.
The fault said Ms Gleave, was due to heavy rain affecting underground cables in Falcon Coppice. Flooding/surface water first had to be pumped away, before repairs could be carried out on Monday (February 3), with apologies to affected customers.
Mr Trevers said the cause of a series of power cuts affecting the Woolton Hill area last spring, had still not been resolved.
On Easter Sunday last year, a power cut affected 1,600 households in Woolton Hill and the surrounding area, including Ball Hill, Highclere and Heath End, due to a fault on the high voltage network.
Power cuts have affected the Woolton Hill area for years - in July 2012 villagers demanded action after five power cuts in two weeks and the company promised the area high priority status, to strengthen the network, in view of the high number of power failures.
