Woolton Hill villagers demand action over power cuts

Southern Electric spokeswoman, Hannah Gleave, confirmed around 24 customers in Greenways lost supplies at 9pm, caused by a faulty generator.
Power was restored to all affected customers by 12.25am this morning (Thursday) according to the company, who say they are monitoring the problem and have given the area high priority, in view of the high volume of recent power failures.
“We will be replacing about 300m of underground cable to strengthen the network and resolve ongoing issues,” said Miss Gleave.
Letters had been sent, she continued, to all customers currently supplied by the generator, informing them of the impending work, with supplies likely to be re-connected to the mains on Friday, or Saturday at the latest.
Villagers this week have demanded action. A spokeswoman for Greenways, Vicki Kyle-Lawrence said locals were she said: “Up in arms about the whole situation.”
“Power on again from the generator at half past midnight so using the opportunity to email whilst we are briefly in the 21st century before we are plunged back into third world status!” said Mrs Kyle-Lawrence, who has contacted the company requesting a meeting to discuss the issue.
A total 1,600 businesses and households lost power on Tuesday July 24 in Woolton Hill, Ball Hill, Highclere and Penwood.
Prior to that a series of three power cuts affected the area in seven days, initially on Tuesday July 10, affecting 859 households in Ashmansworth, Ball Hill, Highclere, Hollington, Penwood and East Woodhay, due to an underground cable fault.
There was a second power cut on Sunday July 15, just five days after hundreds were left without power. Engineers brought in a generator which restored supplies to all customers by 7.50pm that day. However the generator then broke down, cutting supplies to 65 customers on Monday morning (Jul 16), with supplies restored at 4.15pm on Tuesday July 17.
The company has confirmed letters concerning compensation have been sent to 100 customers who qualified for a one-off payment of around £108.
