Word in your shell about a cracking time at Easter
The annual event, in aid of Naomi House Children’s Hospice, Sutton Scotney, attracted a 2,000-strong crowd last year to the scenic castle grounds, the backdrop for the award-winning ITV television series Downton Abbey and the home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon.
Fun and games planned for this year include the egg hunt and children’s Easter bonnet parade, with prizes that the organisers are hoping will be presented by some well-known guest judges.
A display of Rolls Royce and Ferrari cars, vintage military vehicles and 1940s music, courtesy of the Three Belles, will add to the entertainment.
Visitors can also enjoy falconry displays, an animal petting farm, traditional fete, bouncy castle, raffle and coconut shy.
Balloon modellers, face painters and children’s entertainers will also be on hand, with stalls to browse offering goods from local traders.
Last year’s event raised around £5,000 for the charity, which provides care for children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions and their families from across Berkshire and central southern England.
The event organiser for Naomi House, Pam Bacon, said that last year’s event proved a huge success.
“This year we have even more going on and the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon have been kind enough to give us even more space for events and activities.
“We can’t wait to welcome all our eager egg hunters on the day. It’s sure to be lots and lots of fun.”
With only 10 per cent of the £7m needed to provide their services coming from statutory sources, Naomi House is reliant on donations and fundraising.
The event takes place between 11am and 4pm. Entry to the castle’s grounds, including entry to the Easter egg hunt, costs £5. For a visit inside the castle, pre-book online at
