Work begins on new skate park

The new skate park in Victoria Park, Newbury, is expected to be completed within the next 12 weeks

SKATERS in Newbury will soon have a brand new ramp to show off their best tricks.

Construction of the new recreational area started in Victoria Park on Monday (21), and is expected to be completed within the next 12 weeks.

The old skatepark will stay open as long as possible, but there will be a three to four week interval between the old one closing and the new one opening.

Improvements to the playground will start at the end of March, and will last for approximately six weeks.

Town councillor David Allen (Lib Dem, Victoria) said an archaeological survey has been conducted under the site of the new ramp as a precondition of the planning permission, but nothing was found of any historical interest.

In September 2010, Newbury town councillors agreed to spend £100,000 of both developers' financial contributions from the nearby Parkway development and Greenham Common Trust funding to replace the existing skatepark, which was badly worn down.
