Work is set to start on a refurbishment project at Thatcham Library.

The £45,000 project is fully funded by West Berkshire Council through developers’ contributions via the Community Infrastructure Levy.

It will see the installation of an accessible toilet and the canopy above the current doorway removed to create a more modern and visible entrance.

The library will be closed for one week, from Monday to November 4, while the majority of the work is completed and will reopen to the public on Monday, November 6.

The return dates on any books due back that week will be automatically extended.

Janine Lewis (Lib Dem, Tilehurst and Purley), West Berkshire’s executive member for public health, culture, leisure, sport and countryside, said: “Thatcham Library is a very popular community facility with a constantly growing membership.

“In fact, the library has attracted 428 new members in the last six months, a clear testimony to its appeal.

“The accessible toilet was suggested some time ago by the Friends of Thatcham Library Group and we’re delighted to be able to make a start on the improvements.”
