World's End pig farmer's devastating £100,000 loss in suspected arson
Six fire engines raced at 1am to Old Street Farm, World’s End, near Chieveley, where a range of buildings, mobile homes and cars were well alight.
A total of 22 firefighters battled the blaze for almost four hours, before extinguishing the fire at 4.30am.
Pig farmer Russell Kilvington, aged 45, who lives in Brightwalton, was woken at 3am by police knocking on his door.
“They said ‘there has been an incident at your farm’ and that firefighters were putting out four separate fires,” he said.
When he arrived at the farm, the fires were out and he said he felt numb as he surveyed the smouldering ashes.
No one was hurt as the mobile homes were not occupied and no pigs were injured.
However, a devastated Mr Kilvington said he was uninsured for the estimated £100,000 worth of damage and that the fire was the latest in a string of problems, having already battled foot-and-mouth outbreaks and the economic slump.
Mr Kilvington, who has an application in the pipeline to West Berkshire Council to renew planning permission to build a farm shop and refurbish an existing pig building, said he was determined to carry on with the business, despite the setback and fears for his safety and that of his family:
“I’ve got three children, aged eight, 12 and 15, and have to support them,” said Mr Kilvington, who has farmed at the site since 2002 and where security measures include CCTV cameras.
“If anyone has any information, please let the police know,” he added.
Mr Kilvington thanked police and firefighters for their help.
An investigation was launched on Tuesday into the cause of the blaze, which the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) has put down to a suspected arson.
Anyone with information should telephone police on the non emergency telephone number, 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
