Worrying number of drivers clocked speeding in 30-zone

Thatcham town councillors Brian Barnes (Lib Dem, Thatcham West) and Phoenix Dewdney (Lib Dem, Thatcham Central) and district councillor, Keith Woodhams (Lib Dem, Thatcham West), took to Bowling Green Road to record the speed of vehicles, following complaints from residents.
Their aim was to assess the extent of the problem and to encourage any drivers going above the 30mph limit to slow down.
Mr Woodhams said: “Local residents continue to express their fears about the speed of vehicles and the number of crashes taking place in the area.
“I was particularly surprised at the speed of lorries and delivery vans coming through during the late morning.
“Some were recorded doing 36 mph. The highest vehicle speed westbound was 40mph and the highest vehicle speed eastbound was 45mph.
“These speeds are far too high for the safety of other road users, pedestrians and children, especially when parents are walking their children to school along the narrow pavements.”
He added: “Many drivers slowed down when they saw the device flash up their speed and hopefully next time they come through Bowling Green Road they will remember to keep to the 30mph limit, not only for their own safety but for everyone else who lives in the area.”
