Young chefs cook up a storm

The evening on March 15 marked the culmination of The ‘S’ Word, a competition sponsored by Sheepdrove Organic Farm to encourage students to enjoy cooking with local, seasonal produce.
More than 120 pupils from six West Berkshire schools participated in the competition, organised by the Education Business Partnership, which began in January.
They worked in pairs to create a two course meal from local and seasonal produce and had to plan their menu, source their ingredients and cook against the clock.
Winning teams from The Willink School at Burghfield Common, The Downs School at Compton, Kennet School in Thatcham, Little Heath School at Tilehurst, The Clere School at Burghclere and Theale Green School were invited to a celebration reception at the farm where they joined head chef Suzanne Wintle to have a look around the farm and then work in the kitchens to produce food for more than 100 guests.
The Clere School pupil Matt Pawley said: “From our research we have found how important it is to buy local and seasonal ingredients, as doing so benefits the environment and also the appearance and taste of the final product.”
The Clere School teacher Cheryl Wheeler said: “As a school we are so pleased to be involved with the ‘S’ Word and to see how motivated and inspired the pupils have been in researching and cooking with local and seasonal produce.”
Guests were treated to flat breads with hummus, beef stew, roasted vegetable casserole and shortbread, all from fresh, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.
Ms Wintle said: “I am so proud of all the ‘S’ Word students, achieving such culinary high standards and realising this can all be attained locally.”
