Youngsters to try their hand at firefighting
Whitley Wood and Hungerford fire stations are calling on school children aged 12 to 16 to join the Young Firefighters initiative, giving youths an insight into the day-to-day run-ins of a firefighter.
Run by the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Services’ prevention department, the young firefighters will experience practical and theoretical fire service including hose drills, breathing apparatus procedures and fire safety awareness.
The Young Firefighters programme is held every Wednesday evening from 7pm till 9pm during term time at each station at a cost of £1 per session. Whitley Wood and Hungerford are both holding free taster sessions at their stations on November 7 and November 14 respectively from 7pm till 8pm.
Young Firefighters lead instructor, Jim Clark said: “Young Firefighters is a great way to make new friends, learn some useful skills and have fun at the same time.
“We’re all really friendly, so why not pop along to one of the have a go evenings and see for yourself if it’s something you’d like to do.”
