Your chance to question UKIP leader in Newbury next week
Currently the Member of European Parliament (MEP) for the south east of England, Mr Farage will host the meeting at The Racecourse Newbury from 3pm and 4.30pm to outline what his party stands for ahead of the elections for European Parliament on May 22.
He has also recently held public meetings in Buckinghamshire and plans to hold others in other parts of Berkshire and the south east in the coming weeks.
Speaking to the Newbury Weekly News this week, he said: “These are public meetings which no-one else does anymore.
“Public meetings used to be a common part of Britain’s public life and politics. I’m doing my best to bring them back.
“For people who are interested to see who their elected representatives are, they can come along to agree or disagree - that’s real politics.
“Whatever their preconceptions are, they will either be confirmed or removed.”
Mr Farage’s party has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent months after the then UKIP MEP Godfrey Bloom referred to countries receiving government aid as ‘Bongo Bongo Land" while Henley-on-Thames UKIP councillor David Silvester claimed government support for gay marriage had caused the periods of severe weather which have battered the country since December.
Mr Farage said that he did not think the negativity publicity would have a detrimental effect on the party. :“I would rather some people had not said the things they said because it makes it very easy for our opponents....Bouts of negativity are a natural, normal part of political life.”
“I would be very surprised if what we see when it comes to the meeting is not a big, full audience and a party that has moved on significantly in Newbury since 2010”
In 2010, UKIP constituent for Newbury David Black gained 1,475 votes, up from David McMahon’s 857 votes in 2005.
Anyone attending the meeting will have an opportunity to put forward questions and concerns to Mr Farage in an open forum.
