30 Years of Deanwood Park Golf Course celebrated with Pearl Cup return
Glorious sunshine, a joyful atmosphere, and a deep sense of community marked a special occasion at Deanwood Park Golf Course as it celebrated its 30th anniversary with the return of The Pearl Cup.
123 familiar faces returned for the celebration, including former captains, ex-members, and long-time supporters of the club.
Some travelled long distances to be part of the festivities, reinforcing Deanwood’s reputation as a warm and welcoming club with enduring ties to its members.
The highlight of the day was the Pearl Cup, a 10-hole Stableford tournament that brought both competition and camaraderie.
Nine holes were played on the course, with the 10th—a simulated version of the iconic 18th at St Andrews Old Course—played inside The Bunker, Deanwood’s innovative indoor golf facility.
The Bunker also hosted a "Beat the Pro" closest-the-pin contest, generously sponsored by Wilson.
The history of Deanwood Park Golf Course is a story of resilience and passion.
Built by Allan Snook on a modest budget, the course first opened its fairways in May 1995.
Over the years, it has evolved significantly. In 2005, the original barn was replaced by a modern facility featuring changing rooms, a therapy centre, and function rooms—some of the therapists from that time are still working at the site today.
The Vineyard Group acquired Deanwood around 11 years ago, ushering in a new era that included both challenges and growth—particularly during the COVID pandemic.
Despite the setbacks, the course has continued to flourish, with increasing membership and popularity.
The addition of The Bunker has further enhanced Deanwood’s reputation both within the company and the wider community.
In addition to golf, guests enjoyed live music from local talent Sion Whiley and friends, and a lively BBQ in the afternoon sunshine.
Beyond the celebrations, the event supported an important cause—the West Berkshire Community Hospital League of Friends.
Since its founding in 2002, the charity has contributed over £3 million worth of equipment to the local hospital.
Entirely volunteer-run, the League focuses on enhancing local patient care and reducing the need for residents to travel long distances for diagnosis and treatment.
Deanwood’s 30th anniversary was not just a reflection on the past—it was a testament to community spirit, generosity, and a promising future ahead.
The main event was won by Jon Holmes, travelling all the way from Scotland to play.
His excellent score of 29 points beat Deanwood members Teresa Fletcher & Valerie Burghfield, who were second and third respectively with 24 points.
The nearest the pin in the Beat the Pro event was Richard Tripp, who bagged a new bag from sponsors Wilson Golf.
Graham Falconer and Kim Richardson scooped the two outdoor nearest the pin prizes.
The biggest winner of the day was of course the charity, who raised over £5000.
