97th minute wonder strike rescues a point for Tadley Calleva

Tadley Calleva were saved by a 97th minute wonder goal in their 1-1 draw at home to Tooting & Mitcham United.

Forward Sonny Haynes, winger Alex Fragata and full-back Aime Kamdem all came into the starting eleven, as Scott Costello and Kieron Farmer missed out with injury and Sam Bagan served a suspension.

Calleva were under almost immediate pressure, as Brad Neal was called into action with an excellent defensive header to send the ball over the Tadley bar in the ninth minute.

The resulting corner would provide a breakthrough however, as a delivery to the near post was headed past keeper Craig Atkinson to make it 1-0 to the visitors within ten minutes.

Tadley’s response got fully underway in the 23rd minute, after a Tooting & Mitcham shot had sailed wide of Atkinson’s goal.

Calleva went straight up the other end of the pitch and looked certain to score, but the opposing captain swooped in with a dramatic goal line clearance to keep the scores level against all odds.

The half hour mark saw Jack French test the goalkeeper, before winger Alex Miller saw a dangerous effort saved by the feet of the Tooting keeper.

Still trailing at the start of the second half, Tadley continued to push forward.

Atkinson was forced into a great stop in the 56th before Jordan Goater sent a free-kick well over.

Tadley began to turn the screw, dominating the closing moments as a penalty shout for a blatant handball was missed by the referee.

Ash Neal saw a huge chance saved at the near post in what looked to be the last chance of the game.

But in the 97th minute it was defender Andrew Charsley who found the long awaited equaliser.

A cross from the left was headed out by a defender, but Charsley was there to hit it beautifully on the half-volley from over 20 yards out.

A laser of a shot sailed into the top corner to tie things up and save a dramatic point for Calleva.

Calleva sit ninth, still within reach of the playoffs and with three games in hand on some of the other promotion hopefuls.

Saturday sees them travel to AFC Whyteleafe in the Isuzu FA Vase Third Round.
