Action on and off the track, as Newbury’s Flat season concludes




Newbury Racecourse rounded off the Flat season in style, with two days of on track action and Oktoberfest fun in the paddock.

Friday’s highlights came in a trio of Class Three races which occupied the middle of the card.

Mercian Warrior took the win for Eve Johnson Houghton in the 14:51 from odds of 10/3, before Knebworth held off the chasing pack to win the 6f handicap at 15:26.

Miller Spirit denied multiple local contenders to take the 16:01, as he finished strongly to claim the 1m 4f handicap.

Saturday’s action got underway with a 6f race at 13:25, which saw Aidan Keeley pilot 3/1 favourite Prosperitas to victory.

The 14:00 saw a 14/1 surprise winner, as Ellaria Sand took the win for trainer Ollie Sangster.

David Probert rode Nap Hand to the win at 14:34 from odds of 9/2, denying local trainer Ed Walker, who could only manage second place with Sir Lowry's Pass, ridden by Tom Marquand.

Make You Smile appeared to enjoy the heavy ground, as he won the BetVictor Horris Hill Stakes for Hugo Palmer from a pre-race price of 5/1, beating out 9/4 favourite Yaroogh.

The shock of the day was at 15:45, as the BetVictor St Simon Stakes was won by Max Vega for Ralph Beckett, defying huge odds of 22/1 to win over 1m 4f.

Order was restored in the 16:19, as That's Amore took a dominant win to back up his price as 11/10 favourite.

Macari finished the day’s action with a win in the Venture Amateur Jockeys' Handicap, ridden by Miss Maddison Wright.
