All you need to know as the Newbury Cycle Festival takes over town
Excitement is mounting ahead of the inaugural Newbury Cycle Festival on Saturday, June 14, celebrating 100 years of cycling for one local club.
Here’s all you need to know ahead of the big day!
The free event will feature a mass parade of cycles through Northbrook Street, led by vintage bikes from the last 100 years, to which anyone, riding any bike, is invited to participate.
The parade will be set off at 13.00 from West Street by Tony Vickers, Chairman of West Berkshire Council.
Marking 100 years of Newbury Road Club, it will be led by a procession of Vintage bikes, including Penny Farthings.
Anyone with a bike, any age, is encouraged to join the parade.
Pre-registration for free is advised, while participants are encouraged to dress up or ‘bling’ their bikes.
The Parade will be followed by an afternoon of free family-friendly fun in Victoria Park.
The full line-up is available here.
There will be lots to do in the Cycling Arena, including a 1K turbo-dash Challenge, a mini Obstacle course, a mini-mountain bike obstacle course, free coaching, pedal-powered smoothie bikes and Scalextric, tandem rides and more.
The cycling village will feature bike mechanics offering a free check-up and exhibits from cycle and e-bike vendors.
Local cycle clubs Newbury Road Club, Velo, and Spokes will be joined by Sarah Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cycling UK, as part of its National Bike Week.
Other exhibitors include Sustrans, Canal and River Trust, Thames Valley Police, Waterside Centre and Kennet Radio.
Asian Food specialist Momo Bros and Pannekoek Cycling Coffee Van will be providing refreshments.
The festival marks a Centenary in the saddle for Newbury Road Club, and it promises visitors the opportunity to try exciting activities, meet other cyclists, and celebrate all things bikes.
