Talismanic Jake as Town score five in win over Chinnor
Newbury Town made it 12 wins from 12 and moved another step closer to the Hellenic League Division Two East title thanks to a 5-2 win over fourth placed Chinnor.
There were six goals in a thrilling first half, the first of which came in the sixth minute when Jake Allan set up George Armstrong, who scored his 19th goal of the season.
The hosts were back level after 20 minutes but parity didn’t last long as Allan again assisted Armstrong, who fired in his 20th goal in his first season at Town two minutes after the home side had equalised.
Chinnor’s next leveller took even less time as the hosts hit back within a minute, the third goal scored in three chaotic minutes and, after eight minutes without a goal, Jesse Bowers headed Town back in front from close range.
It was 4-2 three minutes before half time when Ross Lawrence headed home, a collector’s item that delighted and astounded his teammates in equal measure.
There was far less to write home about in the second half as the difficult pitch took its toll, but Jake Allan was rewarded for another excellent showing when he made it 5-2 on the hour, sealing three more points and moving the league leaders 11 clear of their nearest challengers, Hazlemere Sports.
Newbury are in Berks and Bucks Cup action on Saturday, welcoming last year’s Thames Valley Premier League champions SB Phoenix with a place in the quarter-final against Letcombe up for grabs.
Meanwhile, Alpha Sesay scored twice as Moritmer made it three wins in three, beating Holmer Green Development 2-1.
A third win on the road in succession leaves the Villagers in third and just a point behind second placed Hazlemere Sports ahead of the visit of fourth placed Woodcote at the weekend.
