Anstey and Mills magic seals win for Newbury in Thames Valley Cricket League

Newbury Cricket Club enjoyed a five wicket victory on a scorching Saturday afternoon at Northcroft.

They faced Wokingham 3rd in the Thames Valley Cricket League Division 4A, who won the toss and elected to bat.

Opener Priyen Prakash led the way with a positive 40, although he had little in the way of help for much of the innings.

Thomas Ballantine’s 17 and Arnav Kulkarni’s 12 were poor contributions, while two other batsmen were dismissed for ducks.

Glyn Clements would eventually steady the ship, hitting a tidy 43, although he arrived seventh in the order and much of the damage had already been done.

Kevin Mills tormented the Maidenhead batsmen, taking four wickets for just 26 runs.

Charlie Anstey went 2-39 and Vinoth Kumar Panneer Selvam 2-46 as Wokingham were left 154-8 at the end of 52 overs.

Newbury needed a quick start and their openers were keen to make that happen.

Simon Digweed wasted little time, reaching 18 before his scoring run was cut short by the bowling of Micah Doughty.

Doughty would take the wicket of his opening partner too, as Shailesh Sawant was bowled for just four runs.

Newbury were searching for a calming presence, and it was veteran Charlie Anstey who delivered this.

Not content with his positive bowling display, Anstey proceeded to steal the show with the bat.

He hit 61, anchoring the Newbury innings superbly and leading the side to the cusp of victory.

He would eventually fall, caught and bowled by Paul Dewick, but Newbury were almost home.

Rohit Sengupta had hit 14 alongside him, and Jagjit Singh had made 27.

Singh finished not out alongside Suryaprakash Sastry, who made 13.

Newbury reached the target to seal a five wicket win under the intense heat.

Their fifth win of the season moves them up into fourth in Division 4A.

On Saturday they’ll hope to make it six, as they travel to second placed Finchampstead 3rd.
