Hutchins’ bout with Commonwealth Youth Game silver medalist Grant Quigley was a final, absorbing fight on a night that saw England snatch a 4-3 win.
Hutchins was close to increasing that score in his 75 kilo bout with the abrasive Quigley from the Port Glasgow Victoria Club. He came out strongly in the opening round and threw some straight shots to push back the Scot’s head several times, while also showing his defensive skills in moving away and blocking counters and he built a three-point lead by the end of the second round.
Quigley had scored with some solid body shots early on, and he came out firing for the final round, and although Hutchins pout together some good combinations, Quigley’s work rate saw him wipe out the deficit to leave the boxers tied on 12 points apiece in a bout that brought the crowd to its feet.
That means a countback, and Quigley was given the punch count by 80-58 although Hutchins could be pleased with his international showing with the likelihood of another England vest beckoning.
