Hungerford have crashed out of three cup tournaments in as many weeks following Monday night’s 4-2 defeat at Beaconsfield SYCOB in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup and now manager Bobby Wilkinson is keen to get back to task number one.
“We know what we want to achieve and that is the league,” he said. “Of course I want to do well in the cups, but although we’ve lost a couple of cup games, we are still in a great position.
“And don’t forget, we’ve had six of our first XI out for these games but we haven’t been playing badly, just giving away sloppy goals.
“But I’ve told the players to relax. We can’t win every single game and we had a bad spell last season and recovered to get into the play-offs. If we win our games in hand, we’re back in second place.”
Wilkinson still has injury worries over Matt Day, Diak John and Luke Hopper and Irish international winger Alan O’Brien is out for a month with a broken foot. But top scorer Mark Draycott returns from a three-match ban and Wilkinson has also recalled Harry Goodger from Newbury although he will not be available until Wednesday night’s trip to Bishops Cleeve.
Newbury sustained their first defeat in six matches when they lost 3-1 at Thame United on Tuesday night, a first reverse for caretaker boss Andy Bayliss.
“We’ve been on a great run really, so we can’t have too many complaints,” he said.
“But to be where we are in the league is ahead of most people’s expectations in our first season in the league.”

face a stiff test on Saturday when they entertain a Witney Town side that has been rattling in the goals this term with two sevens, a six and three fives to their credit already and which lies two places above Newbury’s fourth in the table.
Newbury will be without Harry Goodger following his return to Hungerford, and also have Barry Elmore sidelined by injury but welcome back top scorer Ray Spence.

make the trip to New College Swindon in the Hellenic League without top marksman Russell Benham, who is undergoing a stomach operation.

are again without a league game but have arranged a friendly with Abingdon United at Waterside Park on Saturday.
