Bell inspires stars of tomorrow with visit to local schools

There were smiles all round as England international Lauren Bell visited John Rankin Junior School last week.

The former Hungerford and Berkshire fast bowler spent time coaching before leading an assembly, introducing cricket to lively and enthusiastic students.

Bell, who currently stars for leading domestic side Southern Vipers, was also on a mission to build excitement for her team’s T20 match against South East Stars, which will be held at Falkland Cricket Club on Tuesday.

The game is the first professional cricket contest ever to be held in West Berkshire and scores of schoolchildren are expected to watch live.

Bell, who is set to lead England’s bowling attack in front of record crowds in the Ashes this summer, was visiting as part of Chance 2 Shine’s drive to get more young people involved in the sport.

Cricket, particularly the women’s game, is on a rapid rise and 22-year-old Bell was delighted to have the chance to help students learn about the game she loves.

“When I started playing, there wasn’t the same access or exposure to cricket in schools and at the grassroots level,” she said.

“It’s so important that kids have positive role models to look up to and we’re in the privileged position that we have the chance to inspire.

“I remember I bumped into some young girls who came to watch and insisted on having their hair in the exact same style as me and are dreaming of becoming cricketers.

“I don’t think the parents are too pleased about it because the plaits take ages but it’s special to see those smiling faces.

“We’re hoping we can see loads of kids in the crowd on Tuesday, we might find the next England international in there.”

Meanwhile, Sophie Mosher, John Rankin’s PE co-ordinator, was thrilled with the impact Bell’s visit had on the students.

She said: “Lauren’s visit had a positive impact on our children’s views on cricket and demonstrated that girls can do it too.

“Her passion, dedication and hands-on approach were valuable in building their confidence during the skills session and allowed them to see a strong female role model within sport.

“Lauren has clearly inspired many of the children as they have now requested that we run a lunchtime cricket club.”
