Blues are 99 and right out of it
Promotion-chasing Jersey are way too hot as sorry Newbury concede a new home record
Newbury Blues 0 Jersey 99
JERSEY faltered one short of inflicting on Blues their first home century, but still did enough to hand out a record beating to a Newbury side on home soil.
They also boast Blues' all-time record defeat to their name, having won 122-10 at home back in November and there was little in the way of compensation for the luckless home side in a one-sided massacre.
Blues had two chances to get onto the scoresheet, both kickable penalties for which they chose to go for line-outs. But neither of which they managed to claim.
In contrast, Jersey ran in 15 tries and could have had more, and only an early whistle saved Blues from conceding three figures.
They conceded the first try after only 15 seconds, another record for this awful season, when winger Ed Dawson streaked away to score. With prop Ross Kenwright, flanker Steve O'Brien and scrum half Brendan O'Brien, Dawson and number eight Ashley Elphinstone pocketed hat-tricks, Dawson inside 25 minutes while Elphinstone had to wait until early in the second half to complete his treble. The number eight was shoved over after 10 minutes and he and Donovan Sanders were one of any number who might have claimed the final run-in before the interval with full back Mike Le Bourgeois netting a seven-pointer to make it 47-0 at the interval.
Le Bourgeois bowed out at the break, but his replacement David Doherty merely added to the punishment by scoring four second half tries.
Blues did succeed in limiting the punishment during a 20 minute spell, but six tries in the space of 14 minutes stepped up the flaying before referee Paul Kimber cried ‘enough' to bring the end of the season a little nearer.
Blues will be aiming for a consolation prize when they meet Redingensians on Tuesday night in the semi-finals of the Berkshire Knock-Out Cup at Monks Lane.
Redingensians are fourth in the Division Three South West table in which which Blues will feature next season and on Saturday won 42-17 away to Oxford Harlequins. The tie kicks off at 8pm.
