Blues as good as down - again!
Newton Abbot 60 Newbury Blues 7
NEWBURY BLUES’ life as a National League club was all but ended after their 19th straight defeat of the season in Devon on Saturday.
Their 10-try reverse at Newton Abbot means that even the mathematical equation looks horrendous as Blues will have to win all seven of their remaining games, pocket a couple of bonus point wins and hope that their rivals fail to gather a single point.
They fell behind to flanker Pete Mortimore’s try after 10 minutes following a lineout drive but suffered a blow 10 minutes later when prop Paul Hawkins was injured taking down Abbot winger Joel Clark and they soon conceded again when scrum half Matt Newman rounded off another lineout move and added two more tries with through winger Matt Dayment and hooker Tom Channon.
Blues were given a lift on the stroke of half time by a first senior try from winger Sean Chamunorwa, converted by Dan Thorne, but Ben Cole added two scores and Joel Clark another to take the game beyond the visitors’ reach.
The loss of hooker Alistair Widdop in defending the last score meant uncontested scrums for the run-in as Cole completed his hat-trick and Dayment and Clark added their second tries to complete the scoring.
THATCHAM'S hopes of some cup glory ended when they went down and out of the Southern Counties Senior Vase, 26-17 at home to Chipping Norton in Saturday's semi-final.
