Blues bag basement bragging rights
Both teams were already assured of the drop and well adrift of the rest of the field, but Blues set out their stall as they raced into an early lead. They were ahead inside five minutes when Dan Thorne snapped up a loose ball and went over to convert his own try, adding two penalties in quick succession as Blues established a 13-0 lead.
The home side lost Paul Jones to a yellow card and Bridgwater took advantage when Joe Bussell touched down for Sam Osbourne to convert, only for Blues to restore their advantage when Isaac Nicholls coasted through weak defending to score with Thorne again converting.
Both sides continued to leak scores, Dan Kemmish touching down for the visitors and Thorne kicking a penalty before Newbury's Matt Maher became their second sin- binning and Albion were awarded a penalty try. But Thorne was set up by winger Tom Martin for his second try that put Blues 28-19 up at the break.
The second half scoring pace slowed although there were chances at both ends before Sam Czerpak darted over from a tap penalty and Thorne again converted to give Blues a cushion they had to defend under intense late pressure.
That saw Josh Love sent off for a dangerous tackle on Albion's Ashley Peppard after Roger Drabble had touched down for the visitors, but they could not make the extra man count as Blues held on for only their second win of the season.
THATCHAM scored a 20-14 win over Bicester at Henwick to close the gap on Berks, Bucks and Oxon Premier Division leaders Drifters, who went down 25-20 away to Swindon College Old Boys, while HUNGERFORD gained a valuable win in their battle to beat the drop from the same division when outpointing Gosford All Blacks 34-27 on their own turf.
