Blues had twice lost to Maids by a whisker last term, and it was just as close early on with the teams trading penalties through Richie West and Carl Stephens before West put Blues ahead with a seven-pointer after scoring in the corner.
Blues took that lead into the second period and struck again from a line-out drive, touched down by number eight Eddie Farebrother.
West potted two penalties to give his side breathing space, and Stephens’ late touchdown was not enough to deny Blues a promising start to the campaign.
