Blues kick off with a defeat

No change in fortunes as relegated Newbury start lower level life on the losing side

NEWBURY BLUES descent to Division Three South West failed to bring a change in fortunes as they kicked off their new campaign with a 34-6 home defeat at the hands of Weston-Super-Mare.

They were in contention for an hour, but faded away in the closing stages as Weston ran away with it. Oscar Matthews cancelled out James Mackay's penalty starter with one of his own before Matt Watkins touched down for Mackay to convert and put Weston 10-3 ahead at the interval.

Winger George Wright scored twice and former Newbury centre Andy Evans notched one on his Weston debut with Mackay taking his tally to 14 points, Matthews kicking Blues' other points.
