Booster Bob seals unlikely win in Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury Racecourse

Greatwood Gold Cup day saw plenty of on-track action at Newbury Racecourse, as pre-Cheltenham anticipation continued to build.

The day kicked off at 13:20, as eight lined up to contest the BetVictor Super Boost Has Arrived Veterans' Handicap Chase.

Chad Bament rode to victory on Sam Brown, a 10/3 shot, finishing comfortably clear of Sean Bowen on Grandads Cottage.

Next up was a Novices' Handicap Hurdle at 13:55.

Authentic Legacy lived up to his billing as 9/4 favourite, breaking away after initially being held up alongside the leaders.

He stayed on well to bring home the win for jockey Caoilin Quinn, finishing well clear of Callum Pritchard on Razzle Dazzle Boy and Freddie Gingell on U Cant Be Serious.

Only four horses competed in the Novices' Limited Handicap Chase at 14:30.

Jasmin De Grugy was the pre-race favourite, racing in J.P. McManus colours.

He got held up behind the rest though, as Brendan Powell rode Rivers Corner to victory from odds of 15/2.

Charlie Deutsch rode Venetia Williams’ Zertakt to a second, but was unable to trouble the winner.

There was a local trainer to watch out for in the 15:05 Handicap Hurdle.

Harry Derham’s Lario was priced at 7/2, but was unable to trouble Jack Tudor on Jurancon, a 2/1 pre-race favourite.

Paul Nicholls’ Sorceleur came in third, doing little to worry Tudor out front.

15:45 saw the main event of the afternoon, the BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase.

An enormous field compared to the other races, fourteen went forward for the cup.

Billytherealbigred was the favourite on Saturday morning, priced at 9/4 and ridden by Toby Wynne.

He could only manage seventh though, after a mistake with four left to jump.

16/1 Booster Bob took the win for Stratford-based trainer Olly Murphy, having taken the lead with 100 yards remaining.

A win for Harry Cobden came in the penultimate race, as 4/1 Guard Duty sealed a very simple Handicap Hurdle victory.

He won the last race of the day too, riding Heron In The Park to the win in the National Hunt Flat Race at 16:50.
