Newbury Women head coach Darran Brown found plenty of positives in his side’s performance as they registered their first win of the Championship South West 2 season by beating Wasps 24-5 over the weekend.

The win for Newbury lifted them up to seventh of the season and they still have a game in hand on some of the teams above.

Brown was impressed with the application from his team after they worked well to improve certain aspects of their game.

“It was great, we put a lot of things together that we have been working on and stuff that perhaps hasn’t worked so well in other games really.

“We looked at different ways at why results weren’t going our way and we sat down as a group and made a few tweaks so everyone could work on their specific areas.

“We haven’t really been playing a lot in the last 18 months, so the knocks we’ve had feel really heavier than what they were a few years ago when everyone was playing regularly.”

Brown was thrilled to get up and running with a victory and he played it down to an improvement to how they handled the in-game management.

“We shut out a lot of opportunities that they created and we had more of a game management process rather than 100 mile an hour and missing vital decisions.

“Our decision making was far better and we were able to control the game, we did it well and we made some key calls.”

Newbury have another week off before hosting Trojans to Monks Lane and Brown is anticipating a difficult game.

“We’re expecting a tough one because they have come down a division and they have had some good results.

“They lost a tough game against London Irish, so they’ll be looking to come down and get back on track, but we want to build momentum so we can creep up that table.”
