Burghfield enjoy late drama while Newbury FC lose heavily
Newbury Football Club had a difficult start to 2025 as they lost heavily to Westwood Wanderers.
Newbury welcomed the Thames Valley Premier League’s third best side to Faraday Road on Saturday, but found themselves outgunned in their first game back from the festive break.
Jay Carl Welch opened the scoring for Wanderers on 25 minutes, before Rocco Sofroniou struck in the 50th to make it 2-0.
Welch bagged a second just five minutes later and completed his hat-trick another five minutes after that.
Newbury remain bottom of the league with one win and one draw from their twelve games.
Elsewhere in the division, Tadley Calleva Reserves also fell to defeat at home to Holyport Reserves.
Paolo Cicero struck in the 24th minute, before Nathan Lishman won the game with an 86th minute strike, handing Holyport a 2-1 win.
Burghfield also enjoyed some late drama against Wargrave.
Oliver Brown opened the scoring after just four minutes, but Burghfield were pegged back through goals from Fred Kirby and Edward Thomas.
Jack Bowyer’s 92nd minute goal saved the draw for Burghfield in dramatic fashion.
In Division One, Burghfield’s reserves ran out 4-2 winners against Reading YMCA Rapids.
A hat-trick from Harvey Richardson and Chris Smalley-Ward’s strike helped them on their way.
Meanwhile, Mortimer Reserves played out a 0-0 draw with Fleet Spurs, while league leaders Goring United had no fixture.
In Division Two, AFC Aldermaston Reserves smashed Woodley United Royals at the Bulmershe Pavilion.
Owen Prince, Jordan Ingram, Kyle Bedford and Morgan Best all bagged in a 4-0 win.
