Hungerford Town skipper James Rusby excited for new challenges in National League South
Hungerford Town captain James Rusby believes they have a ‘bigger challenge’ ahead of them as they step-up preparations for the new National League South season.
The Crusaders squad returned to pre-season training last week, with around 30 players being put through their paces by manager Danny Robinson and his coaching squad.
Town will have several weeks of training before the begin friendlies in July and Rusby was thrilled to be back after a break.
“It feels great to be back at it, its hard work already but that’s what it’s all about,” said the captain. “There is always a buzz about pre-season and it’s great to be back with everyone again.
“Last season’s pre-season was definitely a slog yes, but at the end of the day I think the boys were just happy to be out of the house.
“This pre-season is quite a long one too, but it’s all planned out meticulously with the training and games starting soon.
“The sessions are great and we will definitely be up there with the fittest in the league, the management team wouldn’t allow anything less and would have us in full time if they could.”
Hungerford were disappointed that last season’s National League South season ended abruptly, due to the coronavirus pandemic, as the club were sitting comfortably in the play-off spots.
Despite having a consistent campaign, Rusby is fully aware of the challenges his teammates will face come August.
“It was a disappointment how the season was curtailed but that’s now gone, we can’t rest on our laurels as we know we will have a bigger challenge on our hands this season.
“We we’re underestimated by a number of teams last year but I’m sure it will be a different story this year and we will be ready.”
Rusby is one of the leading figures in the squad, having been at Town since 2016, and he has been pleased with how the team is shaping up for the new season.
“It is very important to keep the core of any group as balance and camaraderie is key.
“There is always going to be tweaks and changes due to the management team’s vision and it’s key to get the right type of player to fit the squad.”
