Champion jockey moves training base to Lambourn

Richard Hughes settles into Jenny Pitman's old base - and wins already!

FORMER champion flat jockey Richard Hughes is bringing his embryo training career to Lambourn’s Weathercock House.

He will move to the former base for Jenny Pitman, and more recently home to Carl Llewellyn and Mark Pitman, after leaving the Danebury Stables in Hampshire, owned by Ken Cunningham Brown.

Hughes will be the master of one of Lambourn’s most prestigious training establishments and has been impressed by the valley’s facilities, especially the Mandown gallops.

“It’s all very impressive,” said Hughes, “the walkways between gallops are as important as the gallops themselves but I’ll be using the faster surfaces because the horses I train are all about going quick.”

Hughes moved his string into the stables on Saturday after already claiming a dozen winners in his debut season, and he saddled his first from Weathercock this week when Duchess Of Marmite won the at 32Red On The App Store Handicap at Kempton on Wednesday.

Hughes is the first flat trainer to be based at the renowned Lambourn yard.
