Newbury cyclist beats 100 mile best set in 1964
CYCLING: Newbury Road Club's Claire Kitching rode one of the biggest races of her life to break the club's 51-year old 100 mile record for women in the EDCA 100 mile time trial near Norwich.
It was her first attempt at the distance, but she shattered the previous club best by more than an hour after clocking a time of 4 hours 17 minutes 52 seconds - 61 minutes clear of the previous record ridden in 1964 by Alice Haller, who was timed at 5:19.8.
She averaged more than 23mph over the 100 mile distance on unfamiliar roads with an unfavourable rising south-westerly wind.
