Thatcham side edged out in Newbury Summer Table Tennis League




THE Hooker (Celia Hooker and Jamie Cole) outgunned Thatcham Scorpions (Simon Barter and Lee Calcutt) 12-8 in Division 1 of the Newbury Summer League.

Hooker put up a spirited defence against Barter losing 5-11, 12-14, 12-10, 6-11 before beating Calcutt 3-0.

Cole also beat Calcutt 3-0 and in the signature match, just managed to edge past Barter, winning 11-13, 11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 in an exciting clash.

Scorpions won the doubles 13-11 in the fifth.

Woolton Hill Eagles (Ian and Keith Langley) proved no match for Pickled Eggs (Ray Powell and Beverley Moore).

Ian Langley claimed a fine victory against Powell, winning 6-11, 11-8, 11-5, 7-11, 11-5 and lost in three straight to Moore.

Keith Langley beat Moore 11-7, 11-7, 12-10 and lost in three straight to Powell, while Pickled Eggs won the doubles.

Wildcats (Dale Ballard and Ajai Kamath) cruised past Thatcham Foxes’ Ray Beeks and Christine Milne 15-5.

Ballard beat Beeks 3-1 and then saw off Milne 13-11, 11-7, 11-6, while Kamath beat Milne 3-1 and Beeks 15-13, 11-4, 11-13, 11-9.

Wildcats won the doubles 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 6-11, 11-4.

In Division 2, Thatcham Widows (Dan O’Neill and Andy Jeffery) trounced Dragons (Mo Mushtaq and Allan Bartlett) 13-3 with Widows winning all four singles matches in three straight.

Dragons won the doubles 3-1.

Spitfires (John Panting and Aran Curcher) beat Hurricane (Pat Shaw and Christine Haines) 13-5.

Panting won both matches in three straight, while Curcher beat Haines 10-12, 14-12, 11-8, 13-11 and beat Shaw 3-1.

Hurricanes won the doubles.
