Danny Robinson on his FA Cup ambitions, improving performances and summer signings

Hungerford Town manager Danny Robinson was more than pleased with his side’s performance on Saturday afternoon.

Despite a 1-1 draw at Winchester City meaning a Tuesday night replay, Robinson’s side were unfortunate not to win the FA Cup Second Round Qualifying tie at the first time of asking.

Hungerford took the lead in the 38th minute, as striker James Harding pounced upon a Joe Shepherd knock down in the box and finished well.

This would be undone just six minutes later, as a long range strike from the hosts flew past Ryan Clarke and found the back of the net.

This forced a replay on Tuesday night, which will see the winner face Weymouth in the next round.

Robinson reflected on Saturday’s performance, saying “the past two performances have been very good”.

“We lost against Gloucester last week, but the performance level was there.

“On Saturday it was there again, so I'm really pleased and it's definitely set in the right direction”.

Robinson’s selection has settled somewhat in recent weeks, with important players back from injury and his best side becoming more apparent.

“We’ve got Joe Shepherd back, Rhys Tyler back, Baboucarr Jarra back as well.

“They’re really good players who make a difference to any team.

“We do have a very strong squad, but they will all have a massive part to play throughout the season.”

Town’s summer signings have proven to be shrewd additions so far, with Robinson commenting on their progress.

“Dawid Regula has been training well since he arrived.

“He looks really hungry, he wants to succeed at this level”, he said.

“Alefe Santos has taken a little bit of time to settle in.

“He’s a winger, it’s where he’s played most of his career, but because of injuries he's played more central at times.

“Technically, he’s one of the best players I’ve ever worked with on the ball.

“If we can get him firing he’ll be a big asset for us.”

Welsh winger Elis Watts has continued to show his class this season, with Hungerford having to fight to retain him over the summer.

“He’s getting back to the levels he hit last year”, Robinson said.

“His goal against Gloucester was one of the best non-league goals I’ve seen!

“He had an up and down pre-season, but now he’s back to his level. He was probably the best player on the park on Saturday.”

Robinson is clear in his ambition for Hungerford this year. Alongside a promotion fight in the league, he wants to make cup history with the Crusaders too.

“Clubs at our level, they all want to try and get to the first round proper… see if they can hook a big fish!

“I've got so close to the first round so many times, but I've never quite got there.

“Hungerford have only got there once or twice in their history, so I want to rectify that. That’s what we want to achieve.”
