All Danny wants for Christmas is six points for Crusaders

ALL Hungerford Town manager Danny Robinson wants for Christmas is six points.

The Crusaders go into the festive period just outside the Southern League Premier South play-offs, but they are on a run of just one defeat from 14 games.

And maximum points from games at home to league leaders Salisbury on Saturday and at basement side Didcot Town on Boxing Day would push them closer to their ultimate goal of reclaiming their place in National League South.

But Robinson is under no illusions as to how hard that’s going to be.

He said: “This is a very hard league, so to be top is a real achievement.

“But we don’t fear anyone, either home or away, and we want to protect our recent record.

“Salisbury are a fantastic side, but I think we were a bit unlucky at their place at the start of the season when a sending-off changed the game.”

Didcot are struggling nine points adrift at the foot of the table, but one of their eight points was garnered when they came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at Bulpit Lane back in August.

Robinson said: “We were cruising in that game, but like so often this season we took our foot off the gas and were punished.

“We’re facing two really different games – one team is striving to win the league and the other is battling to stay in it.”

Robinson was again left frustrated on Saturday after seeing his side throw away a two-goal lead as they were held to a 3-3 draw at Beaconsfield.

Conor McDonagh’s hat-trick looked to have sealed the three points until Beaconsfield levelled six minutes into injury time.

Robinson said: “I have no idea where the referee got eight minutes of injury time from – the physios were never on the pitch.”

But he was full of praise for leading scorer McDonagh, saying: “Conor is a special player and I have waited a long time to work with him.”

After the Christmas break, Robinson will turn his attention to making a determined push for promotion.

He said: “We should be higher – we’ve drawn a lot of games when we were winning.

“We are in a good vein of form, on a good run and still unbeaten at home so now it’s time to kick on.

“Hopefully we can get to where we want to be by May.”
