Dolan 'gutted' by FA Vase KO
Tadley Calleva edged out in extra time
Newport (IOW) 4
Tadley Calleva 2 aet
Manager Danny Dolan admitted he was ‘gutted’ after seeing Tadley Calleva’s FA Vase dream shattered on the Isle of Wight.
Tadley staged a tremendous fightback from 2-0 down in this third-round replay, scoring twice in the final 12 minutes to set up extra time.
But Newport, who play in the Sydenhams Premier Division, one section higher than Tadley, struck twice in the extra period to set up a home fourth-round clash with Ashford United.
Dolan said: “We gave a really good account of ourselves, but I am gutted to go out.
“It is no disgrace to go out to Newport, who were very complimentary about us.
“We were the better footballing side on the day, but if you don’t take your chances then you’ll get punished.”
Tadley suffered a blow after only five minutes when centre half Spencer Barlow had to go off with an ankle injury, Nick Kingston slotting into the back four.
James Tennant, Tadley’s two-goal hero from the first leg, couldn’t find his goal touch this week, though, and three good chances went begging for the visitors.
Newport cashed in and opened up a 2-0 lead, but Tadley didn’t throw in the towel and 12 minutes from time Grant Powell beat three defenders before curling home a superb shot to give the visitors hope.
And in the 85th minute, 17-year-old sub Daniel Charsley headed home a James Milford cross to make it 2-2.
But Tadley couldn’t break through again and it was Newport who proved the stronger in extra time.
To rub salt into their wounds, playing extra time meant that Tadley missed their scheduled ferry on the way back and didn’t get arrive home till late on Saturday night.
