WELL, why not? Three days into their first season at the new level and Hungerford top The Vanarama National League South.

It’s only two games, and may only last 24 hours, but what a way to announce the little club’s arrival!

They followed up Satyurday’s win at East Thurrock by proving too powerful, potent, quick and determined for seasoned National League travellers City and were full value for completing their six-point start.

Hungerford made by far the best chances and limited the visitors’ threat to set pieces that found Hungerford’s collective will intact in front of a commanding performance from young goalkeeper George Legg.

Garyn Preen and Nat Jarvis might have had first half goals and Nicholas Bignall was denied by goalkeeper Jack Stevens and the bar before Hungerford went ahead when James Clark’s corner was met at the near post by Mike Jones shortly before the interval.

Hungerford soaked up City’s second half pressure while breaking threateningly with the quicksilver Bignall again going close with flashing angled shot that Stevens tipped over.

But the deserved second goal came after 64 minutes when Jarvis played in substitute Stefan Brown to go around Stevens and send the ball into the far corner, and there was no way Hungerford were going to relinquish that lead.
