Double success for Richard Browne, as England Deaf Rugby tour South Africa

Local rugby player Rich Browne enjoyed success in South Africa last month, as he travelled with England Deaf Rugby on a tour of the country.

The side enjoyed success across both 7s and 10s formats, facing opponents from all over the world.

The tour kicked off with the 7s tournament, as England faced Japan, South Africa and Australia.

They would win all three of these fixtures, sealing the tournament win in the final against Australia, as Browne scored tries throughout.

With one title under their belt, the side moved on to the 10s tournament, where they faced Aussie opposition again in their opening match.

It was a slow start against a physical Australian side, with the change in format presenting a different challenge for the squad which saw them fall to an opening game defeat.

Next up, it was a South African clash which saw England regroup and play their own game to seal a hard fought 27-24 victory.

This was enough to book a place in the Grand Final against Australia in their final game of the tour, but before that, a trip to Pretoria to face the Grizzlies awaited.

Played under the floodlights in the heart of South Africa, this friendly would end in defeat, but the chance to play against an authentic South African domestic side is an experience that won't soon be forgotten.

The final game of the tour ended in more success, as England took their second title of the trip to win the 10s tournament.

Browne’s performances throughout the tour helped England on their way to this success, scoring tries throughout the trip across all formats and playing his part in a tight knit group.

The team were also taken to a Game Reserve and visited a Deaf School in the local area.

Richard Browne would like to thank all the people and companies who kindly contributed to make it possible for him to represent this great England Deaf Rugby Team on the International stage.

England Deaf Rugby is for any player who has experienced hearing loss, is hard of hearing or deaf.
