FENCING: Junior Commonwealth hope hits the target area in Newcastle
FENCER Leonora Mackinnon boosted her chances of selection for England's Junior Commonwealth Championship team next year when she won the latest British Selection Circuit under 20 epee contest in Newcastle.
The result in her first year on the junior circuit, hoisted her into third place in the national under 20 girls epee rankings.
She had gone into the event ranked 12th, but fought her way into the final to face reigning under 20 champion and British squad member, Yorkshire's Caitlin Chang.
The 17-year old had never previously beaten the champion, but after a contest that was neck-and-neck almost throughout, she pulled ahead at the finish to win 15-13.
