Falkland cricket captain James Bird is excited ahead of the new Thames Valley season
NEWLY-appointed Falkland first-team captain James Bird is feeling ‘positive’ ahead of the new cricket season, which gets underway on May 8.
Falkland will begin their campaign against Cookham Dean, but have one final friendly against neighbours Thatcham on Saturday.
The Enborne club are coming off the back of two successive pre-season victories, with the latest one being a 33-run win over Didcot last weekend.
Speaking after the game, Bird said: “It has been really positive really, we have two wins from two in pre-season so far and everyone is ready for the season and we have started well.
“Everyone has been stuck indoors all winter, so all we want to do is get out and play some cricket.”
Bird, who hit an unbeaten 100 in their first pre-season game, scored 81 runs for his side and he believes the first-team have a very strong squad.
“We want to finish as high as we can,” admitted Bird. “We have a very good squad and there is no reason why we can’t finish in the top half of the table.”
“We played everyone in our league last year, but only once instead of twice so we have an idea, but teams have new players every year.”
Falkland 2nd team were also in action as they beat Didcot 2nd on Saturday.
