McAuley in sparkling form to retain title
Gale McAuley retained the Stevenson Trophy at West Berkshire GC when she won the par/bogey competition for the second time.
Having won last year with a score of four points, she went one better this year scoring five points in this format where players score or lose a point for each score better or worse than net par.
Sian Soanes was second with two points and Emma Hackett third with one.
Meanwhile Georgie Seaman scored 39 points to win the Eastwood Cup.
Sandy Miller was second with 35 and Jane Wilmore third with 26.
According to tradition, the cup was presented full of cherries, the wish of a former West Berks member, Nicolette Eastwood, who sponsored the competition and chose cherries for no other reason than she loved them.
There were 21 entries in the nine-hole Hopwood Salver.
Steve Fisher claimed first place on 22 points and Phil Armstrong with 21 beat Bernie Holden on countback to take second spot.
Tony Atkins won the men’s Saturday stableford with 40 points.
Mark Watkins was a point behind in second place while Simon Clarke with 38 beat Stuart Harrison on countback to take third.
The Badger Trophy is a men’s better-ball, stroke play competition played over two rounds.
Nothing was decided in Round 1 as, of the 45 pairs competing, no less than 26 pairs are within five points of the lead.
Rob Camden and Mike Denny with net 65 beat Simon Edgington and Johnny Corbridge on countback to win on the day while Andy Greaves and Steve White were a single shot behind third.
Tom McAuley won the men’s midweek stableford with 39 points.
Bernie Holden scored 38 to take second place as did Richard Watson who was relegated to third on countback.
West Berks ladies’ team lost 3 and 2 in a closely fought semi-final of the Duncan Trophy against Castle Royale at Temple Golf Club.
One match was lost on 17 and two on 18 in this prestigious competition run by Berkshire Women’s Golf and open to all clubs in Berkshire.
West Berks 2 returned to form after the disappointment of last week’s defeat in the semi-final of the Central Sevens Golf League KO competition when they entertained Heythrop Park and won 7-0 consolidating their position at the top of a very competitive Division 2.
Meanwhile the senior team lost 4½ to 1½ at home to the Defence Academy.
