Goals galore in week two of Newbury Sunday League
The second round of games in the Newbury Sunday League football season saw no shortage of action.
As the games kicked off at 10:30 on Sunday morning, Diamond FC were hoping to continue their high-scoring form as they visited Kingsclere.
It turned out to be quite the opposite however, as the side who had won 6-0 last week were beaten 5-0, thanks to goals from Lee Hamilton, Declan Shuttleworth and a Seth Fowler hat-trick.
Champions NWX marked their first game of the season with a win, as they beat Thatcham Tornadoes 1-0 away from home at Douai Abbey to begin their title defence.
At Henwick Playing Fields it was a first ever home game for newcomers The Crickets AFC.
It was a much improved performance too, as the side put in a far more cohesive display against Plough on the Green FC.
Ollie Webster opened the scoring for the visitors, but The Crickets responded before the break as Mikey Simpson made it 1-1.
The second half saw the visitors restore their lead, as Henry Thornton and Ben Rowett made it 3-1.
Simpson would score again late on to keep his side in it, but it wasn’t quite enough as it ended 3-2, with Simpson taking home the AutoMerc Man of the Match award.
Plough on the Green now sit top with six points, while The Crickets will take much encouragement from a far more competitive outing.
This Sunday, Kingsclere will host Thatcham Tornadoes at Headley Playing Fields, whilst NWX will visit The Crickets AFC.
Plough on the Green FC are in Berks and Bucks FA Sunday Cup action against AFC Dukes, meaning that Diamond FC get a weekend off.
