Newbury boxer enjoys double triumph
THAMES Valley ABC’s Rocky Golby scored two impressive wins as he prepares for the Schoolboy Championships.
Golby boxed in Coventry on March 16 against Caiden Thompson of Team Seymour, the host club.
And he ran out the winner by a split decision after an excellent display.
Golby was then selected to box for the Home Counties against the Isle of Man team Manx ABC and travelled with the squad on Good Friday.
He boxed Drew Suwinski of Manx and it was an entertaining first round with both boxers feeling each other out with their left jabs.
The second saw Golby throw more left and right combinations to catch his opponent with a good solid right hand midway through the round with the referee giving Suwinski a standing eight count.
Golby grew in confidence to finish the round in control.
In the third round both boxers gave their all to try and stay in control, but Golby was the more accurate with his combinations and forced his opponent back. Both boxers tired, which caused Suwinski to hold and tie Golby up and the Newbury boxer won on a 4-1 split decision.
The win will give Golby confidence going into the Schoolboy Championship which starts in Carterton on April 14.
The Home Counties coaches commended him on his behaviour and performance.
