Harper swings in to Hungerford
The 31-year old made more than 300 appearances for Royals over a 10 year spell after joining the club form Arsenal, after which he had spells at Sheffield United and Hull City before ending last season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers.
Harper played for 45 minutes in Saturday’s pre-season friendly with Mortimer and still holds out hopes of remaining in the Football League.
But the ‘godfather’ to Wilkinson’s children will play at Bulpit Lane unless something materialises.
"Either way, if I have him for the first month of the season or for half the season, we will benefit from his experience and he is a great addition to the squad," said Wilkinson.
Harper was a key member of the Reading side that won promotion to the Premier League for the first time in the club’s history in 2006 and he remained at the Madejski Stadium until joining Sheffield United in September 2009, initially on loan. He went on to play 34 times for The Blades, and another 29 for Hull.
Harper helped Hungerford to a 9-3 win over Reading League Mortimer on Saturday, Harry Goodger bagging a hat-trick, Luke Hopper a brace and Mark Draycott, Tom Fila, Carl Davies and Mark Davies the other goals.
