Heartache for Humphries as final woes continue and he misses out on World Cup spot

Newbury’s Luke Humphries missed out on a coveted place at the World Cup of Darts after he suffered a fourth final defeat of 2023.

Humphries, who was born and raised in West Berkshire, needed to win the Interwetten European Darts Grand Prix to secure the second spot on England’s team for the pairs event later this month but forfeited a lead as he lost 8-6 in the final to Rob Cross, who held onto his place on the team in dramatic circumstances.

Cool Hand Luke, who won four times on the European Tour last year and rose to a record fifth in the world rankings, reached the final in South Germany and led 4-3 before his fellow Brit Cross battled back to book his place in Frankfurt alongside world champion Michael Smith.

Following his fourth final defeat on the continent since the New Year, Humphries admitted he was “devastated” to miss out on the World Cup.

“It hurts the deepest,” he said.

“I just can’t seem to catch a break at the moment, I get punished for every little mistake I make.

“There was a lot on the line there and I showed a lot of bottle to give it a good go and fair play to Rob, it was a fantastic performance from him.

“This is one of the most gutted I’ve felt in my career because there’s no other player that wants to pull on that England shirt more than me.

“I’m devastated to be honest but it is what it is and I have to bounce back.”
