Golfers raise money for charity on Captain’s Day
THE team of Greg Collins, Simon Barrie, Darren Boulton and Charlie Overton won the mixed Captain’s Day competition held on Saturday at West Berkshire Golf Club.
The winners returned 94 points in the Am-Am format, three clear of Wayne Rolls, Steve Salter, Tim Hoiles and Nathan Keep, while Gary Scott, Stuart Gillis, Ray Downes and Alfie Rosier took third place with 89.
Chipping and putting challenges were held against +2 handicapper, Army golfer and Gurkha soldier Gaz Gurung, who was the special guest for the day.
The event has, so far, raised over £1,200 for Home-Start West Berkshire whose director Grace Green, wife of West Berks captain Barrie, said: “This money will go directly towards supporting
families in need in West Berkshire.
“We are thrilled by the generosity of the club members and its sponsors.”
Clere Golf, GazKaz and Puttmate sponsored the day and supplied prizes, while an honesty bar was run by volunteers from Home-Start West Berkshire supported by Renegade brewery.
Newbury & Crookham and Donnington Grove both generously donated prizes for the competition.
Captain Barrie Green said: “It was a wonderful day supported by a very generous membership who have answered my call to help those in need across West Berkshire.”
The following day, a team comprising Stuart Gillis, Terry Phelps and Chris and Seamus Ramsey won a closely-contested mixed Texas Scramble with 58 points.
Simon Barrie, Greg Collins, Darren Boulton and Will Barnes were a point behind in second place, while Joe Burke, Simon Matton, Andrew McAllister and Lee Nicholson with 56 won a three-way tie decided on countback to claim third.
Sally Field scored gross 92, net 73, to win the ladies’ midweek medal, while Catherine Barnard gross 116, net 75, was second and Georgie Seaman gross 111, net 76, was third.
In team events, the ladies beat Sand Martins 3½-1½ in the third round of the Duncan Trophy, a BWG knockout competition open to all clubs in Berkshire, securing their place in the semi-final.
Meanwhile, the seniors returned from Donnington with a hard-earned 3-3 half, while the Vets lost 3½-2½ at Bicester.
